Confirming the battery is actually the problem

Before spending anything, check battery health in settings. Both major platforms report maximum capacity as a percentage of original. Below roughly 80%, replacement is justified. Above 90%, the battery is probably not your problem and you should look at storage, background apps or a specific misbehaving application instead.

Symptoms that point clearly to the battery:

• Shutdowns at a non-zero percentage, especially in cold.
• Sudden percentage drops — from 40% to 12% in a moment.
• Charging very rapidly to full then draining very rapidly.
• Visible swelling, which separates the screen from the frame. This is urgent: stop charging and stop using the phone. A swollen cell is a fire risk and must be handled by someone equipped for it.

Symptoms that usually are not the battery: apps crashing, slow app launching, poor signal, overheating during specific tasks only.

The four replacement routes

Manufacturer service

Most expensive, most reliable. You get an original cell, correct adhesive, proper resealing of water resistance where applicable, and no warranty complications. Turnaround varies and the device may need to be sent away. The right choice for a recent flagship still under warranty or for anyone who values water resistance being genuinely restored.

Independent repair shops

Usually markedly cheaper, often same-day. Quality varies enormously between shops. Ask two questions: what cell are they fitting, and do they reseal for water resistance. A good shop answers both readily. Ask about warranty on the repair itself, which is a decent proxy for confidence in their work.

Mail-in services

A middle option. Send the device, get it back in a week or so. Cheaper than manufacturer service, more consistent than a random local shop. The downside is being without the phone, so plan around it and back up first.

DIY kits

Cheapest by a wide margin, and genuinely feasible on many models. The realistic obstacles are adhesive removal, screen-connector fragility, and the near-certainty of not restoring water resistance to factory standard. On phones with glued-down batteries and glass backs, difficulty rises sharply. On older or mid-range devices with simpler construction, it is an afternoon.

Tiers are relative bands rather than prices.

Cell quality and safety

Not all replacement cells are equivalent, and the difference is not capacity marketing. It is the protection circuitry.

A quality cell includes a protection board that cuts off on overvoltage, overcurrent and excessive temperature. Very cheap cells cut corners here, and that is what turns a bad battery into a dangerous one. Buy from established repair-parts suppliers rather than from the cheapest listing available.

Be sceptical of cells advertising capacity substantially higher than the original. The physical space is fixed. A meaningfully larger capacity in the same volume implies either an inflated specification or reduced safety margin. Matching original capacity is the correct target.

Handling and disposal

• Never puncture, bend or crush a lithium cell. Removal pull-tabs exist precisely so you do not have to pry.
• Discharge the old battery below about a quarter before removal, which reduces the energy available if it is damaged during extraction.
• Do not put lithium cells in household waste or general recycling. They cause fires in collection vehicles and facilities. Use a battery-specific drop-off, which most electronics retailers provide.
• Tape the terminals of the old cell before transporting it.

If a battery is visibly swollen, do not attempt DIY removal. Take it to someone equipped to handle it. The cost of professional handling is trivial next to the risk.

Deciding between repair routes

The choice comes down to three variables: how much water resistance matters to you, how much your time is worth, and how much security support the phone has left.

If the device has less than a year of security updates remaining, the cheapest viable route is correct, because you are extending a device with a known expiry date. A DIY kit or a budget independent shop makes sense. If it has three or more years remaining, pay for the route that preserves the device properly, because you are investing in something you will keep.

Water resistance is binary in practice. Either you rely on it — you work outdoors, you have dropped phones in water before, you take it near a pool — or you do not. If you rely on it, manufacturer service is the only route that credibly restores it, and the price difference buys something real. If you do not, that premium buys nothing and an independent shop is the better value.

On time: a DIY replacement on an unfamiliar model realistically takes a couple of hours including research, plus the risk of an unrecoverable mistake. A shop does it in under an hour while you wait. Anyone who values their afternoon more than the price difference should skip DIY regardless of technical confidence.

After the replacement

A new cell does not report accurate percentages immediately. The device's fuel gauge estimates remaining charge partly from a learned model of the specific battery, and that model needs recalibrating. Running the phone from a full charge down to shutdown once, then charging uninterrupted to full, gives the gauge the data points it needs. Expect erratic percentage behaviour before this and treat it as normal rather than as a defective cell.

Verify battery health in settings afterwards. A genuine new cell should report at or very near full capacity. A replacement reporting noticeably less than that from day one was not new, which is a useful check on whichever route you chose. On some devices, non-original cells trigger a service warning or suppress the health readout entirely; that is a parts-pairing behaviour rather than an indication the battery is bad, but it is worth knowing before it surprises you.

Finally, dispose of the old cell properly at a battery collection point with the terminals taped, and check that the device still seals correctly by inspecting for any gap around the screen edge before considering the job finished.

Extending the new battery's life

Having paid for a replacement, the habits that determine how long it lasts are worth applying deliberately. Enable adaptive or optimised charging so the phone holds below full overnight. Avoid charging inside a thick case, which traps the heat that does the actual damage. Keep the phone out of direct sun and out of hot vehicles. None of these are onerous, and together they plausibly add a year before the next replacement is due.
