What to evaluate before price
Almost every VoIP service will give you a working number for very little money. The differences that matter show up months later, when you try to do something the marketing page never mentioned. Evaluate on these six axes before you look at cost.
Port-out policy
Can you take the number with you if the service shuts down or you get frustrated? This should be findable in writing. Services that make porting out difficult, expensive, or discretionary are holding your number hostage, and that risk compounds the longer you use them. A number you cannot leave with is a number you are renting permanently.
Number reclamation on inactivity
Free tiers frequently reclaim numbers after a period without use. That period can be surprisingly short. If you are holding a number as a stable contact point but only using it occasionally, an inactivity policy will take it from you without meaningful warning. Read this clause specifically.
SMS verification behaviour
Every VoIP number is classified as VoIP in the databases services query, which means many financial institutions will refuse to text it. No provider can fully solve this because the classification attaches to the number range. Some services do better than others on ordinary commercial SMS, particularly short-code messages from retailers and delivery services. Assume banking verification will not work regardless of provider.
Background reliability
A VoIP call arrives as a push notification. If the operating system has aggressively suspended the app to save battery, the notification can be delayed or dropped and the call goes to voicemail while your phone sits silent. Concurrent device support

They typically bundle a number with texting and calling in a single subscription and focus on the personal use case — dating, classifieds, side projects. Check whether the number is yours to port or is pooled and recycled, since this varies enormously within the category.
International and travel-focused
If the point is a local number in another country, a travel eSIM or an international VoIP provider serves better than a domestic service with add-on international calling. The rates are structurally different.
The test that separates them: ask what happens to your number if you stop paying for one month. Providers that suspend and restore are safe. Providers that release the number back to a pool are not, no matter how good the feature list is.

Setting it up so it actually works
Three configuration decisions cause most VoIP complaints.
Enable call forwarding to a real number. Even if you intend to answer in the app, forwarding as a fallback converts a missed call into a received one whenever the push notification fails. This is the single highest-value setting.
Exempt the app from battery optimisation. Both mobile platforms will suspend a background app to save power, and a suspended VoIP app cannot ring. The setting is buried in per-app battery options and is off by default for good reasons that do not apply here.
Set voicemail deliberately. If you have both a carrier line and a VoIP line, you now have two voicemail boxes, and the second one tends to accumulate messages nobody checks for months. Enable transcription and email delivery so messages surface where you actually look.
Finally, test it properly before you publish the number. Call it from another phone with your primary device locked and in your pocket, on cellular data rather than Wi-Fi. That is the real-world condition, and it is where the failures show up.
Common mistakes
- Using it for two-factor authentication. It will work on some services, fail on others, and the ones that fail are exactly the ones you care about. It also breaks recovery if the provider reclaims the number.
- Assuming emergency calling works. Many VoIP services do not offer it at all, and those that do rely on a registered address that may be wrong. Keep a working carrier line for emergencies.
- Publishing the number before checking port-out terms. Once printed on cards, listed in directories and given to clients, a number is expensive to change. Verify you can keep it first.
- Relying on the free tier for business. Free services change terms and offer no support recourse. If the number is load-bearing for income, pay for it.
- Ignoring the inactivity clause. A number held but rarely used is exactly the profile that gets reclaimed.
The general principle: VoIP is superb at flexibility and poor at guarantees. Use it where flexibility is the point, and keep a carrier line for anything where a guarantee is the point.
Migrating an existing number in
If you already have a number you want to keep but no longer want to pay a carrier for, moving it into a VoIP service is the usual endgame. Sequence matters. Open the VoIP account and confirm it accepts inbound ports for your number's region first, because not every service covers every rate centre. Generate the port-out PIN with your current carrier, gather the account number and the billing address exactly as it appears on the bill, and submit the port request from inside the VoIP service.
Expect the process to take anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks depending on the losing carrier. During that window, keep the original line active and paid. Calls continue to arrive on the old service until the moment the port completes, at which point they switch over without further action. If the request is rejected, the reason is almost always a mismatch in the account details rather than anything technical, and resubmitting with corrected information resolves it.
