Before You Start
T-Satellite is T-Mobile's satellite connectivity service powered by SpaceX's Starlink network. It lets you send texts, share your location, and use select apps in areas with no cell coverage — anywhere you can see the sky.
The service launched in July 2025 and is available to customers on any carrier, not just T-Mobile. Setup takes about five minutes and doesn't require any physical hardware changes to your phone.
You'll need three things:
- A compatible phone (60+ models supported — see the list below)
- An unlocked phone if you're not on T-Mobile (phones bought directly from Apple, Samsung, or Google are typically already unlocked)
- An available eSIM slot on your device (non-T-Mobile customers only)
Check Phone Compatibility
The fastest way to check is through T-Mobile's T-Life app. Download it, sign in or create an account, go to Account, select your phone line, scroll to Status, and tap T-Satellite. It will tell you whether your device is compatible and whether it's already enrolled.

T-Mobile Customers: Activation Steps
If you're on a T-Mobile plan, activation is straightforward.
If You Have Experience Beyond or Better Value
T-Satellite is already included with your plan at no extra cost. Your phone will automatically connect to the satellite network when you're out of cell range — there's nothing to enable or configure. Just make sure your phone's software is up to date.
If You Have Another T-Mobile Plan
T-Satellite is a $10 per month add-on that you can enable and cancel anytime.
- Open the T-Life app on your phone
- Sign in to your T-Mobile account
- Go to Account → Manage Data & Add-Ons
- Find T-Satellite and tap to add it
- Confirm the $10/month charge — it auto-renews monthly
- Your phone will begin connecting to satellites automatically when out of cell range
You can cancel the add-on anytime through the same menu in the T-Life app. There's no contract or commitment.
AT&T, Verizon, and Other Carriers
T-Satellite is open to customers on any carrier — not just T-Mobile. The process requires a few extra steps because you're adding a T-Mobile eSIM to your existing phone.
Step 1: Verify Your Phone Is Unlocked
Your phone must be unlocked (not restricted to a single carrier). Here's how to check:
- iPhone: Go to Settings → General → About → scroll to Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions," you're unlocked.
- Android: Try inserting a SIM from a different carrier. If it connects, you're unlocked. Or contact your carrier to confirm.
If your phone is locked, contact your carrier to request an unlock. Most carriers will unlock devices once they're fully paid off.
Step 2: Enroll in T-Satellite
You have three options:
- Online: Visit T-Mobile's T-Satellite enrollment page and follow the prompts. You'll need to provide your phone's IMEI number (found in Settings → About Phone).
- By phone: Call T-Mobile at 1-855-596-0755
- In person: Visit any T-Mobile store
During enrollment, T-Mobile will provision a T-Satellite eSIM on your device. This eSIM handles only the satellite connection and won't affect your regular carrier service. The cost is $10 per month.
Step 3: Software Update
Make sure your phone's operating system is fully up to date. Satellite connectivity features are delivered through software updates from Apple, Google, and Samsung. Outdated software may prevent the satellite connection from activating properly.
Free Emergency 911 via Satellite (Everyone)
Regardless of carrier or whether you pay for T-Satellite, anyone with a compatible phone can enroll in free satellite emergency texting to 911. This service sends a text to 911 dispatchers when you're out of cell range and have a clear view of the sky.
To enroll in free satellite 911: T-Mobile customers can add it through the T-Life app. Non-customers can enroll at t-mobile.com/coverage/satellite-phone-service or call 1-800-937-8997.
Important: Some phones already have built-in satellite emergency features (iPhone 14+ has Apple Emergency SOS via Satellite, and Pixel 9/10 have Android Satellite SOS). If your phone has a native satellite SOS feature, you may not be eligible for T-Mobile's Text to 911 service — but you're already covered by your phone's built-in system.
Your First Satellite Connection
Once T-Satellite is activated, it works automatically. You don't need to manually toggle anything. Here's what happens when you leave cell coverage:
- Your phone loses its regular cellular signal
- After a brief search, it connects to a Starlink satellite overhead
- Your phone's status bar displays "T-Mobile SpaceX" or "T-Sat+Starlink"
- You can now send and receive texts and use supported apps
The connection may not be instant. Satellites move across the sky, and your phone needs to find one with a clear line of sight. If you don't see a satellite connection right away, give it a minute and make sure you're outdoors with an unobstructed view of the sky.
Tips for the Best Experience
- Download and sign in to supported apps (WhatsApp, Google Maps, AllTrails, AccuWeather) before heading into areas without cell service
- Keep your phone's software fully updated
- Hold your phone upright with the screen facing you for the best antenna orientation
- Be patient — messages may take a few seconds to a few minutes to send
- Avoid trying to send large photos or videos; stick to text and lightweight data
Troubleshooting
Phone Won't Connect to Satellite
- Make sure you're outdoors with a clear view of the sky — clouds are fine, but buildings, mountains, and dense trees block the signal
- Verify that T-Satellite is activated on your account (check in the T-Life app)
- Confirm your phone's software is fully up to date
- Wait at least 2–3 minutes; satellite connections can take time to establish
- Restart your phone and try again
Messages Failing to Send
Satellite messaging isn't instant. Your phone will continue retrying automatically until the message goes through or fails. If a message ultimately fails, you'll receive a notification prompting you to resend. Try moving to a location with a clearer view of the sky and resending.
Feedback and Support
T-Mobile encourages feedback through the T-Life app — open the app and lightly shake your device to bring up a help menu. Note that if you're connected to satellite at the time, the feedback will be sent once you reconnect to the regular cellular network.

Can I use T-Satellite with a locked phone?
No. If you're not a T-Mobile customer, your phone must be unlocked. T-Mobile customers can use T-Satellite on their existing locked devices since the service integrates with their T-Mobile account directly.
