What actually ends a phone's life
Very few phones stop working. They get retired for one of five reasons, and knowing which one is approaching tells you whether to spend money on the device or start saving for a replacement.
- Battery degradation. The most common, the most visible, and by a wide margin the cheapest to fix.
- End of software support. The manufacturer stops shipping security patches. The phone still works; it just becomes progressively riskier to use for anything sensitive.
- Network obsolescence. A carrier retires a network technology the phone depends on, or requires a feature the phone lacks. This is the only one that can kill a phone overnight.
- Storage exhaustion. The phone becomes unusable because there is no room for updates or new apps. Fixable without buying anything.
- Physical damage. Screens, ports and water. Repairable, at costs that vary enormously by model.
Notice that only one of these is genuinely fatal, and only one is unfixable. Most five-year-old phones that get thrown away were retired for reasons one or four, both of which cost a fraction of a new device to address.
Battery chemistry, and what charging habits actually matter
Lithium-ion cells lose capacity through two independent processes: cycle ageing, which comes from charging and discharging, and calendar ageing, which happens over time regardless of use. Calendar ageing is accelerated by heat and by sitting at a high state of charge. This is why a phone left in a hot car at 100% degrades faster than one used normally.
Manufacturers rate batteries to retain roughly 80% of original capacity after a specified number of full cycles — commonly several hundred, and higher on recent devices that use adaptive charging. In practice most people notice the drop somewhere in year two or three, not because of a cliff but because the phone no longer comfortably reaches bedtime.
Habits that measurably help
- Keep it cool. Heat is the dominant variable. Charging inside a thick case, leaving the phone in direct sun, or gaming while charging all produce heat that permanently costs capacity. If a phone is uncomfortably warm, stop what is causing it.
- Enable optimised or adaptive charging. Both major platforms offer a feature that learns your schedule and holds the battery below full until shortly before you wake. This directly reduces time spent at high state of charge. It is on by default on most modern devices; verify rather than assume.
- Avoid habitually draining to zero. Deep discharges are harder on the cell than partial ones. Occasional full discharge is harmless; doing it daily is not ideal.
- Do not store a phone at full or empty. If a device is going in a drawer for months, leave it near half charge and power it off.
Habits that do not matter
- Overnight charging. Phones stop drawing current when full. Combined with adaptive charging, this is a non-issue on any device from the last several years.
- Third-party chargers, provided they are from a reputable maker and correctly certified. The phone negotiates the charge rate; a compliant charger cannot force more into it.
- "Calibrating" the battery by full-cycling it. This recalibrates the percentage indicator, not the cell. It does not restore capacity.
- Closing background apps. Modern operating systems suspend background apps aggressively. Manually killing them often costs battery, because relaunching from cold is expensive.
The single highest-value intervention is replacing the battery once, somewhere around year three. It typically costs a small fraction of a new phone and restores the device to something close to its original endurance. People replace entire phones for a problem that a battery fixes.
Software support windows and what expiry means
Support has two layers, and conflating them causes unnecessary panic.
Feature updates bring new OS versions. Losing these means your phone stops gaining functionality and eventually some apps raise their minimum OS requirement past what you run. Annoying, gradual, not dangerous.
Security updates patch vulnerabilities. Losing these is the real deadline. An unpatched phone accumulates known, publicly documented holes, and browsers and messaging apps are the most exposed surface. There is no visible symptom — the phone works exactly as before, which is precisely what makes it easy to ignore.
Support windows have lengthened substantially. Several manufacturers now commit to multi-year security support on flagship and mid-range devices, with the longest commitments running well past the point where the battery would have needed replacing. Budget devices frequently get much shorter windows, which is a hidden cost that rarely appears in a price comparison.
Working out your deadline
Support is usually counted from the device's launch, not from your purchase. Buying a phone two years into its lifecycle means inheriting a shortened window. Before buying anything, especially discounted or refurbished, check the manufacturer's published support-end date for that exact model. This is the most commonly overlooked factor in phone purchasing.
What to do when support ends
- Stop using the device for banking, primary email and account recovery.
- Keep the browser and messaging apps updated as long as their developers still support your OS version — app updates continue after OS updates stop, for a while.
- Consider repurposing rather than discarding: a music player, a dashcam, a security camera, a dedicated navigation device, or a spare for travel where loss would not be catastrophic.
Network obsolescence: the one that ends things abruptly
Everything else degrades gradually. Network changes do not. When a carrier shuts down a network technology, phones that depend on it stop working on a specific date.
The mechanism to understand is VoLTE — voice over LTE. Historically, phones used older network generations for calls even while using newer ones for data. As carriers retired those older networks, calling moved onto LTE, which requires the phone to support VoLTE and requires the carrier to have certified that specific model. A phone can have perfect LTE data and still be unable to make calls if VoLTE certification is missing.
This is the trap in buying grey-market or foreign-variant phones. The hardware supports the bands; the carrier's provisioning system does not recognise the model, so voice never works properly. Band support is necessary but not sufficient.
Checking compatibility before you buy
- Find the exact model number, including regional suffix. Variants of the same phone differ in band support.
- Check the carrier's device compatibility tool by IMEI where one is offered. This checks provisioning, not just bands.
- Confirm VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling support specifically, not just "5G" or "LTE."
- For rural use, pay attention to low-band frequencies, which carry further and penetrate buildings better than the high-band spectrum marketing focuses on.
If you are keeping an older device on a network with weak indoor coverage, Wi-Fi calling often matters more than band support — it routes voice over your home internet and sidesteps the coverage problem entirely, provided both the phone and the plan support it.
Storage: the invisible killer
A phone with no free storage cannot install updates, cannot cache app data, and becomes dramatically slower because the filesystem has no room to work. People interpret this as the phone being old. It is not.
Where the space goes
- Photos and video. Almost always the largest single category, and increasingly so as default capture resolutions rise.
- Messaging attachments. Every image and video anyone has ever sent you, cached indefinitely by default in most messaging apps.
- Offline media. Downloaded music, podcasts and video that you listened to once and never removed.
- App caches. Individually small, collectively substantial, and regenerated constantly.
Recovering it without paying for cloud storage
Offload photos and video to a computer or an external drive periodically. Clear messaging-app media caches, which is usually a single setting rather than a manual purge. Delete offline downloads you no longer play. Uninstall apps you have not opened in six months — both platforms can list these for you. Most people recover a substantial fraction of their storage in under ten minutes doing exactly this, and the perceived speed improvement is immediate.
One nuance worth knowing: both platforms reserve a slice of storage for system operations, and performance degrades before the indicator reaches zero. Aim to keep roughly a tenth of total capacity free as working room rather than treating the last gigabyte as usable. A phone held permanently at 99% full will feel sluggish even though nothing is technically wrong with it, and no amount of clearing caches helps if the underlying headroom is never restored.

Repair economics: when to fix and when to stop
The decision is not sentimental. It is a comparison between the repair cost and the remaining useful life, and remaining useful life is bounded by the software support date, not by how the phone feels.
Nearly always worth it
- Battery replacement on a phone with two or more years of security support remaining. Best value repair in the category by a wide margin.
- Charging port replacement. Ports wear out and fail from lint compaction long before anything else does. Often the port is not even broken — a compacted plug of pocket lint is the actual fault, and carefully clearing it with a wooden toothpick fixes it for free.
- Cracked back glass where it affects wireless charging, if quoted cheaply. Cosmetic-only cracks can be left alone.
Judgement calls
- Screen replacement. On a recent flagship this can approach a meaningful fraction of a mid-range phone's price. Weigh against support window remaining.
- Camera module failure on a phone whose cameras were already the weak point.
Stop
- Water damage that has caused intermittent faults. Corrosion continues after the repair, and intermittent faults recur.
- Motherboard-level failure. The cost approaches replacement value.
- Anything on a phone already past its security support date.
Before any repair, back up. Repairs sometimes require a factory reset, screens sometimes fail during disassembly, and a device sent away occasionally does not come back. A repair without a current backup is a gamble with your data.

A five-year maintenance schedule

Day one
Fit a case and screen protector before you do anything else. Verify adaptive charging is on. Note the model number and look up the published security-support end date. Put that date in your calendar — it is the real expiry.
Every six months
Clear the charging port with a wooden toothpick. Clear messaging caches and offload photos. Check battery health in settings. Confirm you have a working backup by checking its date, not by assuming.
Year two to three
Expect battery health to drop below the point where the phone comfortably lasts a day. Replace the battery. This is the intervention that adds the most years.
Year four
Check remaining security support. If more than a year remains, continue normally. If it is close, begin moving financial and recovery accounts off the device and start watching for a replacement rather than buying under pressure.
Year five and beyond
If support has ended, retire the phone from sensitive use. It remains perfectly good as a dedicated media device, a car navigation unit, a controller for smart-home gear on an isolated network, or a travel spare. Wipe it properly before any hand-off or sale — a factory reset with encryption enabled, and remove it from your account so activation locks do not strand the next owner.
