What Is RCS?

The Green Bubble Problem — And the Fix
For years, messages between iPhone and Android users were sent as SMS or MMS — the "green bubble" messages on iPhone. RCS does not work across all carriers worldwide — while US carriers fully support it, international carrier adoption varies. RCS on iPhone does not turn green bubbles blue — Apple maintains the visual distinction. RCS does not replace third-party apps like WhatsApp or Signal for users who prefer those platforms for privacy or feature reasons.
How to Enable RCS
iPhone (iOS 18+)
Go to Settings, then Messages, then RCS Messaging. Toggle it on. Your carrier must support RCS — all three major US carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) and most MVNOs do. After enabling, messages to RCS-supported Android phones will automatically use RCS instead of SMS/MMS. You do not need to do anything different — the Messages app handles the protocol selection automatically.
Android (Google Messages)
Most Android phones use Google Messages as the default messaging app, and RCS is enabled by default. RCS integrates directly into your phone's native messaging app — there is nothing to download, no account to create, and no need for the other person to install anything. If both parties have RCS-capable phones on RCS-supporting carriers, it just works. Third-party apps offer additional features that RCS currently lacks: cross-platform group encryption (Signal), disappearing messages with custom timers (Signal, Telegram), channels and large group chats (Telegram), business messaging and payment integration (WhatsApp), and platform independence from your phone number. For US domestic messaging between iPhone and Android, RCS has closed the biggest functionality gap. For international messaging, group privacy, and features beyond basic messaging, third-party apps still have advantages.
RCS for Business Messaging
RCS includes a business messaging standard called RCS Business Messaging (RBM). This allows businesses to send rich, interactive messages — with carousels, buttons, suggested replies, and branded graphics — directly through your phone's native messaging app. Airlines, banks, retailers, and delivery services are increasingly using RBM for notifications, booking confirmations, and customer service. Unlike SMS-based business messages, RBM messages can include images, links, and interactive elements without the character limits and formatting constraints of traditional text messaging. Google has been the primary driver of RBM adoption, and Apple's RCS implementation on iPhone extends the reach of business RCS messages to the entire US smartphone market.
